Air Shims? Joists Should Rest on the Ledger Board

The ledger board is secured nicely to the wall but the joists do not rest on the ledger board.  Not exactly sure how ‘air shims’ work!

Stairway to Heaven

These may be the stairway to Heaven. One missed step and you could fall over the edge to… They look cool but they are not safe. No railing and no kick boards.
